The Sustainable Dining Committee came together in late 2007.  A few students, passionate about campus and food sustainability, initiated the meetings with GT Dining in order to express their views about current dining practices and work to decrease the environmental impact of student dining at Georgia Tech.  Dining Services is dedicated to sustainability and customer satisfaction.  This committee is an opportunity for student to create real, positive change on campus.  It also helps GT Dining create a dining program which students are proud to have on their campus and be part of.

This group meets monthly at dinner meetings to discuss action oriented ways to improve the sustainability of campus dining at Georgia Tech.  The mutual respect demonstrated by both students and GT Dining management has created an environment where creative problem solving and big ideas are always encouraged.  We look forward to continuing this open dialogue in future semesters and, as always, anyone is welcome at the meetings.

Committee Projects

Energy Conservation Crew

Students are working to increase the energy efficiency of the Georgia Tech Kitchens by helping with the GT Dining Energy Audit and performing weekly employee trainings.  Students started meeting with kitchen employees once a week at employee huddles in February of 2011 to discuss basic sustainability concepts and help to foster the best equipment usage habits.  The way employees use equipment greatly determines how efficiently that equipment runs.  This training uses a verity of techniques in order to encourage responsible, safe and efficient equipment management.  For more information email Cassie Syfrett or Grant Grimes.

Waste Squad

Georgia Tech students hate waste.  Sustainable Dining Committee members have decided that food waste is a issue on campus that they can impact.  Last semester GT Dining hosted Jon Bloom (Blog: http://www.wastedfood.com/), an expert in the culture, volume and sources of food waste in America.  After his inspiring presentation and round table/action planning session students decided to combat food waste on campus.  This past Spring 2011, students started a "weigh your waste" program which allows patrons in GT Dining locations the opportunity to see how much post consumer food goes to waste every day.  They will also be working toward create a Campus Kitchens(http://www.campuskitchens.org/national/) program to divert food waste from landfills or compost piles and into the mouths of the hungry by packaging and donating left over food from GT Dining locations to local charities.
